A Guest Post by ME!

I was asked a few months ago to write a guest blog post and it never came to fruition for a variety of reasons. Instead of letting it go to waste, I figured I'd share it right here with you all. So enjoy this guest post by yours truly!
Hello, everyone, author Lyssa Layne here. When I'm not busy chasing after my five-year-old mini me then you can find me at one of two places... behind my laptop, frantically typing to get the latest story out of my mind OR more likely at a MLB game. Growing up in the heart of America, smack dab in the middle of baseball country, I was born and raised a St. Louis Cardinals fan. In recent years, I have started to turn my daughter into a die hard Cards fan as well. We've spent many a hot and humid day waiting outside Busch Stadium for a glimpse, or hopefully, even an autograph or two from one of the players. There's a lot of downtime while we wait for the players to stroll in, some in fancy SUVs with tinted windows, others carpooling three or four teammates in tiny cars, so I have lots of time to daydream in between telling my child to stop doing cartwheels on concrete so she doesn't bust her head open.
Being a writer, my mind is always exploding with ideas so I can leave a game with three or four new ideas by the time we get home. Of course, I'm usually too exhausted and hot to do anything other than jot down a couple words only for me to read them later and not have a clue what I was trying to say. #authorproblems Now, the great thing about being in St. Louis, is that many of the players live in the area and St. Louis is so large that you're bound to know someone, or know someone that knows someone that knows a player so research is easy to come by. I've heard many stories about players and the bottom line is that the majority of them are just regular, every day people, they work out at local gyms, their kids go to our public schools, they play trivia at the bar down the street, and chances are that you've probably been at the same place as them outside of the baseball fields and just not known it.
Now, for anyone that's read any of my books, you know that I like to write about the every day guy and girl so mix that with my love of baseball and the research I've done and viola-it's the recipe for my sports books! I also love to write about strong women which is why you'll find a female athletic trainer in The Right Pitch, a female sports agent in Loved by the Linebacker, and a strong, independent, single mother in Another at Bat. While a sports story might not intrigue all readers because it seems a bit manly or they don't watch sports at all there's a fine line of writing the romance while adding in the right amounts of sports to move the story along. For me, I write what interests me and what I'd want to read about and judging from the responses I've received from my books, there's lots of readers out there with the same interests as me!!!

Boy meets girl. It’s the way romances usually begin . . . and while we all love a happy ending, it’s the #MeetCute that wins our hearts.
How did you two meet?
The #MeetCute Books each have a unique answer to that query. Some might make you swoon, others might make you giggle . . . and some may make you blush.
Twelve authors. Twelve stand-alone contemporary romance novels. Twelve stories that will make your heart beat a little faster.
Because it’s all about the #MeetCute.
For each #MeetCute Book, we'll share a couples interview in the style of the "When Harry Met Sally" clips. (Check them out here!)
In FIFTY FROGS, Vivian kisses some frogs . . . but there's only one guy who captures her heart.
Vivian: The first time we met, it was in the middle of a street, and I was forced out of the car against my will.
Charlie: Let's just be clear here: it wasn't me doing the forcing.
Vivian (laughing): No, that's true. It wasn't. That was my mom and Aunt Gail.
Charlie: Remind me to thank them for that.
Vivian: Anyway . . . (mock glares at Charlie), when I saw you the first time, I thought you were cute.
Charlie: Tell the truth. You thought I was smoking hot, standing there, holding my rake. And when the turtle got involved, I was damn near irresistible.
Vivian: Right. Only, I did resist you.
Charlie: For a long time. While you were busy doing other things. <clears throat> It took a while and some help before you finally gave into my charms.
Vivian: Okay, so what did you think when you first saw me?
Charlie: I thought you were incredible, beautiful and full of passion. I also thought you had a nice ass.
Vivian: Are you talking about the day we met in the street? That wasn't my best day. I can't believe that's what your first impression was. Also, did you even see my ass that day?
Charlie: I mean the first day I saw you. And yeah, checking out your ass is always a top priority for me. Always was . . . always will be.
Vivian: Awww, you say the sweetest things!
Charlie: I only ever speak the truth, babe. That's a forever thing. Just like us.
Fifty Frogs releases on June 27th. You can preorder it here today!
Vivian is sick of dating. Sick of the way guys treat her, sick of living and crying by when and if they call . . . she’s just done. When her aunt reminds her that a girl has to kiss a lot of frogs before she finds her prince--Aunt Gail says that number is fifty--Vivian decides she’s taking control of her dating life: she’s going to go on a series of first dates only, and each one must end in a kiss. She begins chronicling each date--the good, the bad and the downright unbelievable--with a plan to turn the stories into an in-depth magazine series about the realities of dating in the twenty-first century. Everything’s going along according to plan until Vivian hits a bump in her road with Frog Number Five, who doesn’t seem to understand his role in this deal. And despite Vivian’s determination to make it all the way to the big five-oh, when fate keeps throwing this same man across her path, she begins to wonder if maybe it’s time to ditch the plan . . . and kiss just one more frog.

I am a writer.

I am a writer.

I know you're probably reading that sentence and thinking, "Duh, Lyssa Layne writes books. She's an author so of course she's a writer!" But it wasn't until yesterday that it hit me that Now, let me try to explain...

Yes, I write books. I write tragic love stories, sometimes with a happy ending and sometimes not. I spend majority of my free time writing but I never really thought of myself as a writer in the sense of expression. My daughter turned five on May 18 and in the matter of less than a week, we have experienced the endings to many chapters... the last day at our sitter's, the last day of preschool, moving on to kindergarten and leaving behind friends that are younger. We've also celebrated a lot this month... Mother's Day, her birthday, etc...

Now, let me rewind here and say I hate to cry or be emotional. I don't like hugs or being touchy feely. Sometime in the last ten years, my outward demeanor changed and I have lots of ideas as to why but we'll just say that it has. I don't like to verbally tell someone how I feel about them, except for my five-year-old who doesn't understand the sentiment of my words. I would rather write them a card, an email, dedicate a picture and some words than have to say "I'll miss you" or "I'm forever grateful." It's not that I'm too proud to say those things, I'm just awkward with saying it.

Okay, now back to the endings and celebrations... I've posted lots of pictures with lengthy words trying to express my true feelings but it wasn't until I showed my daughter's babysitter what I wrote about her and she started to cry that it suddenly hit me-I'm a writer!!!

Apparently, all these years and I never realized that writing is my outlet! It's how I express what I can't bring myself to verbally say. I know some of that has spilled over into my writing especially in the story Baby, Maybe. Did you know that the majority of that book came straight from my blog/journal I wrote while going through fertility treatments? I write my daughter a letter every year on her birthday then I seal it up and put it in a safe so that I can send it to her when she's older. I also hand write them in cursive so who knows if she'll be able to read them by then!

Once it hit me that I was a writer, I laid in bed thinking back to all the ways I have written over the years... blogs, journals, stories, letters, and the list goes on. It only took my thirty-four years to understand that writing is my way of expressing my emotions. Wow... who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

He walks into his new job with an arrogance that’s sure to land him proby duty for the rest of his days but he has the professional skills to back his attitude. Loving every minute of his time with fire, Paul struggles to find his place in the FDNY brotherhood. Outside of the station, a true playboy at heart, he has no issues making connections, but there’s only one girl that holds his heart.

Paramedic Mariana Barbosa is new to the big city. Luckily, her path crosses with Paul Jefferson shortly after accepting her new position. The two instantly connect and become the best of roommates... or something like that. Behind closed doors, the two are the perfect couple without crossing any lines because Mariana is too afraid to risk their living situation to pursue what her heart is telling her she feels.

When Mariana feels betrayed by Paul, she jumps on the opportunity to date the handsome, good guy from work. Paul isn’t a fan of Mariana’s new boyfriend and starts to slack with Engine 58. Things don’t go as expected with Mariana’s new boyfriend and after she uses Paul to cover her issues, she pushes him further away until it may be too late for either of them to admit their true feelings.

Wicked in the Quad Cities Signing~March 2017

Well, another signing is in the books for 2017, two down and five more to go! My mini-PA and I loaded up in the car and headed to Rock Island, IL for Wicked in the Quad Cities yesterday. If nothing else, we got cool points for the awesomeness of #twinning we had going on while we rocked our Lyssa Layne shirts and red Converses.

We didn't realize there was a parade in town. We didn't get to see it but my mini-PA loved the decorations!

One of the best part of signings is catching up with old friends. Michele Shriver and I have been writing buddies since our charming days of Florida Georgia Line edits. I finally got to meet her last July at Writers on the River so it was great to see her again! Then I got to meet Amy Manneman who both her and Michele are in my upcoming box set, Luck of the Draw. We had a great time chatting and I'm pretty sure I accidentally made an inappropriate comment about "pulling out" in front of Amy's daughter so I apologize about that!

My mini-PA was a great helper at first... until she found a friend to play with then she deserted me! Or she'd come back to hand out swag to readers but then she started trying to give my books away, too, and I was like, "No, baby, that's buying our dinner!" She was kind of like a Sour Patch kid, "first they're sweet then they're sour!"

At one point, she ran past me at Michele's table and was holding my book. I stopped her and asked what she was doing, she told me she was just reading one of my books aka looking for sight words. #thankgoodnessnaughtybitsarentsightwords

Emily Pearson's daughter and her split their time between the movie theater under Emily's table and the dance floor in the room beside the signing. It was funny to walk by Emily's table and catch sight of either my mini-PA's hair or shoes hanging out of her table. Thank goodness the book community is part of our village!

OMG! I was super pumped that Angie from Writers on the River was there! She sported a Lyssa Layne shirt and volunteered at the event. FYI-I have a couple tickets to give away to Writers on the River in Peoria, IL on July 8 so if you're interested, hit me up!

Aubrey Wynne had these adorable turtle bookmarks that my mini-PA was eyeing from the moment we got there. Since she did so awesome during the event, I let her buy one which she promptly wore as a necklace!

Then as we were walking back from the bathroom before we left for the day, I caught sight of a photobooth and yelled at Angie to come jump in the pic with us.

Overall, it was a good afternoon! I got to see some great author friends, reunite with bloggers and readers, and the best part is that I'll see them all again in just a few months at Writers on the River!

Love & Famiglia: The DiDominzio Novellas by Yours Truly

Love and Famiglia
The DiDominzio Novellas
Lyssa Layne

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Date of Publication: 3/13/2017

Number of pages: 400
Word Count: 157,013

Cover Artist: Amanda Walker

Book Description:

Meet the DiDominzio family—fiery, loud, Italian. Francesca, Antonia, Gianna, and Carmine were raised by their strict, old school Italian father. Each sibling has their own journey but how they find their happily ever after definitely isn’t easy.

The King and the Pawn - Francesca, the baby of the family, wants nothing more than to fulfill her dream of being a fashion designer. Unfortunately, Papa DiDominzio will stop at nothing to squash her dreams and lead her toward the traditional career of the women in their family. Francesca concocts the perfect plan to bring home a man her father will hate in hopes that he’ll make a deal so she can still reach her dreams.

Not in Love - Antonia, the sexy second to youngest DiDominzio, exudes nothing but sex appeal, especially with her non-traditional blue eyes. After dating one man after another, Antonia thinks she’s finally found the man of her dreams until she realizes the one she really wants has been right in front of her since they were children.

One Day as a Lion - Gianna, the eldest DiDominzio sibling, is the only one that has followed Papa’s wishes by marrying an Italian man and working in his restaurant. While her brother and sisters suspect something isn’t right with her marriage, none of them can prove any differently. However, there is one man that will do everything in his power to save Gianna from the man she calls her husband.

Destined For You - The only male sibling, Carmine is more like a second father to his sisters than their brother. There’s only two things that are important to Carmine-his family and his club. Keeping up with his sisters and running his successful business leaves him no time to find a mate. As luck would have it, fate falls into his lap, changing his world, in more ways than one… and not necessarily for the best.

“But, Papa, this is the opportunity of a lifetime! Do you know how many aspiring fashion designers have the chance to build their own line of clothing at only twenty-four?”
Desperation. Yes, there’s definitely desperation in my voice, but there’s nothing left. I’ve begged, I’ve pleaded, I’ve cried, but nothing has broken my father’s old-school Italian demeanor. This is a last ditch effort to convince him to sign off on the trust my Noni DiDominzio left for me so I can fulfill my career aspiration of my own women’s fashion wear. My boss is moving to France and has offered me to take over his line, giving me free reign on designs. All I have to do is come up with three months rent and it’s mine.
“Francesca, in nine months, the trust will be yours to do as you please. However, I suggest you look at how your siblings used their inheritance. Their money was used to buy a house, a car, even start a business which is how Noni intended for you children to use it.”
I throw back my head and let out an exasperated sigh. Lifting my head up to look at my father, I take a deep breath, knowing that I’m walking on thin ice. My father, Andrea DiDominzio, is Italian through and through. He’s got the full head of dark hair, the olive skin tone, brown eyes, and the man sticks strongly to his Italian beliefs despite the change in times. My siblings and I look exactly like our father, except for Antonia, my middle sister, who has blue eyes. However, we all share the loud, feisty attitudes which we’ve inherited from our father, his father, and his father’s father. Being the baby of the bunch, I have to fight louder than the others to be heard, but it still doesn’t mean I get my way.
Speaking calmly, I nod, “I would be doing the exact same as Carmine. He used his money to buy the nightclub. I’ll be starting my career with Noni’s money. Papa, this is just the beginning of what I can do with my skills.”
Papa leans back in his plush leather chair on the other side of his desk, his fingers steepled together. He’s not smiling with his lips but I can see it in his eyes. “Francesca, you know I don’t agree with your choice of profession and I can assure you Noni wouldn’t either. When you turn twenty-five, the money is yours so you can do as you please then.”
“But, Papa, the opportunity will be gone by then and I’ll be out of a job!” I stomp my foot like a child not getting their way.

“Mia figlia, you know that you always have a job at the restaurant which would be an excellent place for you to meet a good Italian man to settle down with.”
He’s smirking. The man is seriously smirking at me while he stomps all over my dreams. I’m not even going to entertain his suggestion. Turning my back, I grab my jacket off the chair and mutter under my breath in Italian.
As I open the door, my father calls to me. “Francesca, ladies don’t speak that way. I’ll see you in a few days at our Christmas celebration weekend.
With a huff, I slam the door to his office and let out a scream. My father is infuriating but I’m not giving up on my dream. One way or another, I will have my clothes in a show in New York Fashion Week. Just wait, Papa, I’ll make you proud despite not having your blessing.

All About the Indies~Arlington, VA

Whew! This author momma is exhausted! We just spent a whirlwind trip in Arlington, VA for All About the Indies Multi-Author Event. I'll get to the event itself but first, all the fun things we did...

One of our first stops was Sprinkles  for cupcakes! The judge from Cupcake Wars owns the shop.

We mastered the Metro and it only took us two full days to find out that I didn't have to pay for my Mini Me to ride!

We did a Monuments by Moonlight tour. Someone was asleep before we found the last monument but the weather was gorgeous for hanging out outside.

Then Saturday was the event! My helper stayed with me the entire time and was such a good helper handing out swag.

She even took this picture of me which I think turned out pretty awesome! You'll probably notice it as my profile pic.

I was surrounded by amazing indie authors!!!

And even had an ad to get my name right there with the itinerary!

Was this not a completely adorable idea? Event coordinators, you need one of these at your next event!

Dionda Fugitt wrote Adjust Your Crown for young ladies. I bought AR and I a copy. Dionda's girls were so great entertaining AR. I can't wait to start reading this book, I think it'll even have some tips in it for me!

Reese A. Stephens was my awesome neighbor! I loved chatting with her and the email she sent me afterward just gave me chills because I love when I meet women who have been through the same thing I have and I just love hearing their wonderful success stories.

So there you have it, another great signing in the books! Sade Rena did an amazing job putting this event together and is an awesome member of the indie community. Thanks for all your hard work, Sade!!!
